Born in Havana in 1984, Rodney Barreto belongs to a family with a strong musical heritage.
At sixteen, he was already participating in international tours as a professional drummer. After graduating from the Amadeo Roldán Music Conservatory, he was part, amongst other groups, of the Isaac Delgado orchestra, Interactivo, Elmer Ferrer´s band, Alexander Abreu & Havana d ́Primera, which he co-founded with Abreu, Omara Portuondo´s group (featuring Diego El Cigala in 2016) and Chucho Valdés´s group, with whom he won a Grammy Award in 2016 with the CD "Live in Marciac" and was nominated for another Grammy Award in 2013 with the CD "Comanche".
In 2009, he served as the accompanying musician for several Cuban and international artists at the famous "Peace Without Borders" Havana concert. In 2010, together with drummer Oliver Valdés, he produced "Drums La Habana", the first percussion CD-DVD with two drummers and artistic directors, which won the 2010 Cubadisco award for best CD-DVD. Since 2017, he acts as musical director of the Rakatan Ballet Dance Company by Nilda Guerra. In 2021, he released his first solo CD-DVD "Drummer Negrito" with the label Colibrí which was pre-nominated to the Latin Grammys and won the 2021 Cubadisco oruze in the "Making Of " category.
In this concert he plays with Los Ojos de la Rumba, a new Latin jazz band based in Amsterdam, boasting an international lineup hailing from Mexico, Spain, and Italy. Their music transcends boundaries, blending the rich traditions of Latin music with innovative twists. From soulful guaguanco rhythms to cutting-edge jazz explorations, they captivate audiences with original compositions inspired by the great tradition of Latin stars.
Each member brings a wealth of experience, having performed alongside renowned artists such as Alain Pérez, Chick Corea, Demetrio Muñiz, Bill Laurence, and Maite Hontele.
With performances spanning across the globe, from New York to Paris, Amsterdam to Madrid, Tunisia to Mexico, and Vienna, igniting stages at prestigious venues and festivals, leaving audiences enchanted by their repertoire dynamic and soul-stirring performances.
