Cacha Mundinho – A musical voyage of discovery through world of Lusophony
Vocalist/guitarist Joana Almeida provides the basic compositions supplemented, and enriched with the collaboration of Sjahin During on percussion, Maripepa Contreras on hobo, Felix Hildenbrand on contrabass. The word ‘cacha’ comes from Cape Verdean creole and is a corruption of “catch”, ‘mundinho’ comes from mundo and means “small world” … Cachamundinho: “catch a small world.”
The Cacha Mundinho Quartet is a spanking new acoustic outfit that spontaneously arose during jam sessions of musicians living in the same neighborhood who took the time to delve into new sources of musical inspiration. Since the cultural sector lockdown was initiated on March 13, 2020, percussionist Sjahin During and Joana Almeida have been occupied with this new formation, intent on interconnecting the rich Lusophone music cultures.
Almeida came to live in Amsterdam in 2020 and has dedicated her life to follow a unique path: she is the first female, classical fado guitarist in Portugal. She composes original pieces in Portuguese, inspired by fado and traditional Portuguese troubadour songs but with her own unique and contemporary take on tradition. Elements from Cape Verdean and Brazilian music are combined with the improvisatory agility of top-notch jazz.
Accompanied by José Soares, originally from Portugal, but now based in Amsterdam having graduated from its Sweelinck Conservatory, the Cacha Mundinho Quartet has its own sound, to honor the Lusophone world. Soares works with such musicians as Suyn Mi Hong, Harmen Fraanje and Fuensanta Mendéz. Felix Hildenbrand on contrabass is already a veteran in the jazz and world music scene and performs on a regular basis with fado vocalist Maria de Fátima, jazz guitarist Anton Goudsmit, trumpeter Eric Vloeimans and saxophonist Efraïm Trujillo. Sjahin During is the percussionist and initiator of the group and known with his international established ensembles such as Arifa & Namibian Tales. The Cacha Mundinho Quartet is a sparkling new offshoot from the centuries old tree of the Lusophone music cultures.

De basiscomposities komen van vocaliste/gitariste Joana Almeida, aangevuld en verrijkt met de inbreng van Sjahin During op percussie, José Soares op saxofoon, Felix Hildenbrand op contrabas. Het woord ‘cacha’ komt uit het creools van Kaapverdië en is een verbastering van “vangen”, ‘mundinho’ komt van mundo en betekent “kleine wereld” … Cachamundinho: “catch a small world.”
Het Cacha Mundinho Quartet is een geheel nieuw akoestisch initiatief dat spontaan is ontstaan gedurende de covid-19 periode tijdens jamsessies van bevriende muzikanten die in dezelfde wijk wonen en de tijd namen om nieuwe muzikale inspiratiebronnen aan te boren. Sinds 13 maart 2020, terwijl het hele culturele leven stil werd gelegd, zijn percussionist Sjahin During en Joana Almeira bezig met deze nieuwe creatie, die de rijke Lusafone muziekculturen met elkaar wil verbinden.
Almeida woont sinds dit jaar in Amsterdam en heeft haar leven gewijd aan een uniek traject: ze is de eerste vrouwelijke, klassieke fado gitarist in Portugal. Ze componeert eigen composities in het Portugees, geïnspireerd door de fado en traditionele Portugese troubadour liederen maar met een onmiskenbaar eigen en actueel signatuur. Elementen uit Kaapverdiaanse en Braziliaanse muziek worden gecombineerd met de improvisatorische wendbaarheid van de betere jazz.
Aangevuld door José Soares op saxofoon, die oorspronkelijk uit Portugal komt, maar thans woonachtig in Amsterdam na zijn afgeronde studie aan het Amsterdamse Sweelinck Conservatorium, biedt het Cacha Mundinho Quartet een eigen sound, ter ere van de lusafone wereld. Soares werkt met musici zoals Sun Mi Hong, Harmen Fraanje en Fuensanta Mendéz. Felix Hildenbrand op contrabas is al vele jaren actief in de jazz- en wereldmuziek, en treedt regelmatig op met fado-zangeres Maria de Fátima, jazzgitarist Anton Goudsmit, trompettist Eric Vloeimans en saxofonist Efraïm Trujillo. Sjahin During is de percussionist en initiatiefnemer van dit gezelschap, bekend van Arifa & Namibian Tales. Het Cacha Mundinho Quartet is een fonkelnieuwe loot aan de eeuwenoude stam van de lusafone muziekculturen.
