This evening, we honor the force of Vungira (known as Pomba Gira), in Brazil an ancient Central African deity intertwined with the imagery of the Roma deity Kali. In many popular representations and rituals, this presence carries the story of Roma women, Povo Cigano, through more than five centuries of migration to Brazil and their continued presence across the globe. They also embody the power of “opening the path,” supporting people in walking their trajectories and pursuing their goals in life as well as support with negotiating their future.

In Brazil, Roma and Maroon communities shared spaces and collective lands. Roma people, among many other diasporic peoples, are part of the historical formation of CandomblĂŠ houses and anti colonial struggles. Roma women have long carried the labor of working in the streets through various forms of fortune telling, and in Europe through centuries of public reading practices.

For the fourth time at Theater Munganga, Mameto Kaloyá will conduct a public tarot reading session, honoring the Roma and Candomblé traditions of public divination. The ceremony begins with anonymous questions placed into a shared vessel and drawn at random, on any subject. Afterwards, three participants are invited to ask direct questions. The session will also include invited guests that bring other perspective on the knowledge of Tarot. The sesion’s guest is Luna, a Tantra and Tarot practitioner that has learned from their master Alejandro Jodorowsky.

About Tulipa’s Society

Tulipa’s Society Amsterdam and Teatro Munganga welcome you to a series of traditional singing and drumming workshops, alongside gatherings dedicated to sharing knowledge about Brazilian Candomblé and the tradition of priestesses.

Housed at Teatro Munganga, Tulipa’s Society honours Zahar - a Vungira in the Brazilian Candomblé tradition. It is inspired by Sociedade das Tulipas, a sisterhood based at Redandá Candomblé House in Cipó-Guaçú, São Paulo, which has been organising beneficent events for hospitals treating Wildfire disease and other causes since 1970.
