ORTINHO, an artist from Caruaru-PE, is considered by specialized media as one of the best songwriters of his generation.
He was one of the leading figures of the movement that would become a cultural tsunami transforming the country, leaving the permanent mark of the Caruaru-born artist on Recife soil: Mangue Beat.
At the height of the movement, led by Chico Science, Ortinho formed the band Querosene Jacaré and released an album that would become a reference in Pernambuco rock:.“VOCÊ NÃO SABE DA MISSA UM TERÇO”.
With his talent gaining national recognition, Ortinho soon became a collaborator with composers such as Chico Science ("Sangue de Bairro" – soundtrack of the film Baile Perfumado by Lírio Ferreira), Lula Cortes, Jorge Du Peixe, Chico César, among others.
Seeking new paths as a composer, he left the band and moved to São Paulo, where he found many partners and friends. In 2002, he released his first solo album, “ILHA DO DESTINO”, featuring major names in Brazilian music such as Arnaldo Antunes, Zeca Baleiro, Marcelo Jeneci and Paulo Lepetit, who became regular collaborators, along with Chico César, Bocato, and others.
According to critic Tárik de Souza, one of Brazil’s most respected, “Ilha do Destino” was one of the best Brazilian albums of 2002.
Four years later, he released the equally praised album “SOMOS” also featuring many guest artists. It was highlighted in Carta Capital magazine in an article by Pedro Alexandre Sanches, who wrote:
“Ortinho is the Glauber Rocha of Brazilian music.”
A restless composer longing to reconnect with his roots, he returned to Recife and began working on his third solo album, “HEROI TRANCADO”.
Before completing this musical trilogy, he reunited with Arnaldo Antunes, resulting in several new Brazilian music hits. Songs were recorded by Arnaldo Antunes (“Iê, Iê, Iê”), Marcelo Jeneci (“Feito pra Acabar”), and Ortinho himself, including the hit “A Casa é Sua”, later re-recorded by Maria Bethânia on her Cartas de Amor CD/DVD, which has over 25 million streams on Spotify.
In “HERÓI TRANCADO”, which earned him the Talentos Brasileiros award from Revista Contigo in 2011, Ortinho once again brought together many friends. The album features: Arnaldo Antunes, Dengue (bass) and Jorge Du Peixe from Nação Zumbi, Vicente Machado (drums) and Chiquinho (keyboards) from Mombojó, Edgard Scandurra, the young and talented pianist Victor Araújo, and Daniel Belleza. It’s no surprise that “HERÓI TRANCADO" was considered one of the best Brazilian pop-rock albums by much of the specialized press.

In 2022, he released “CARUARUS VOL 1”, an album focused on regional rhythms, where the artist returned to his roots in his hometown — known as the capital of forró. He released hits in collaboration with major Brazilian artists such as Chico César, Zeca Baleiro, the forró queen Anastácia, and the legendary Azulão, a cultural icon of Pernambuco. The album received wide acclaim and established Ortinho as one of Brazil’s great forró composers.
Recently, Ortinho released his new album “REPENSISTA”, a work deeply influenced by the music of the 60s and 70s. He coined the term “Psychedelic Northeast” to describe this genre, which blends traditional northeastern folk culture with the psychedelic sounds of electric instruments.
