“Canvas is a jazz piano trio, located in Amsterdam, that consists of Orestis Petrakis from Greece (piano), Pedro Ivo Ferreira from Brazil (double bass) and Nick Thessalonikefs from Greece (drums). They all met at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where they started studying on 2014. They immediately formed a strong personal and musical bond, which resulted in developing a unique identity, since they grew musically at the same time and influenced each other a lot.
The trio started blending influences from artists like Shai Maestro, Pablo Held, Brad Mehldau, Aaron Parks and Wayne Shorter and composed a lot of original material, trying to expand their musical pallet as much as possible. They focused a lot on writing melodies that can be sang, and strong polyrhythms.
The trio participated in the Keep an Eye Jazz Award Competition on 2016 and was awarded the Incentive Prize and the Best Cva Soloist Prize as well. After that, the trio started playing a lot in the Netherlands and Greece and finished recording its debut album “Common Ground”, which was released in May 2017.
Canvas will be touring in Belgium, France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands in January 2019, in order to present music from their new album “ Transitions”, which was recorded in January 2018 and is available online in all major platforms.”
