Sodale is an international music project formed by Sofiia Popova (vocals), David Huson (guitar), and Leon Bartelsman (violin). Rooted in curiosity and storytelling, the project explores musical traditions from Brazil, Cabo Verde, Ukraine, and Argentina, weaving together flamenco-inspired guitar, jazz-influenced violin, and intimate, expressive vocals.
At the heart of Sodale’s sound lies a sense of saudade - a shared emotional landscape of
longing, memory, and belonging.
The project grew out of the duo Sofiia & David, formed in Amsterdam in 2024 by Ukrainian singer Sofiia Popova and Dutch guitarist David Huson. Their collaboration was born from a shared fascination with music from around the world and a desire to explore how different cultures express universal themes such as love, loss, and connection to one’s homeland.
Their songs unfold like delicate embroidery, where symbols, melodies, and stories intertwine
to reflect the essence of each tradition.
Originally performed in a minimalist setting of voice and guitar, the music invites listeners into an intimate and immersive journey across borders. With the addition of violinist Leon Bartelsman, Sodale expands this sonic landscape, opening new spaces for improvisation, dialogue, and emotional depth while staying true to the project’s intimate core.
Sofiia & David have performed in different venues across Amsterdam and supported Brazilian artists including Castello Branco. In August 2025, they performed a sold-out show at Felix Meritis as part of the renowned Grachtenfestival in Amsterdam. Now performing as Sodale, the trio continues to build bridges between cultures, offering audiences a deeply personal yet globally rooted musical experience.
