Leila vive num vilarejo, em Moçambique. Num certo dia, ela conhece Greetje e seus pais, que chegam da Holanda para uma visita de trabalho à fábrica de Incomati. Na despedida, Leila ganha um cartãozinho de sua amiguinha.
Todos os dias, Leila tira o cartão postal de seu baú de tesouro e olha fascinada as flores ali exibidas. Ela sonha em caminhar entre os canteiros daquele parque de flores. No meio de uma noite encantada, ela toma uma decisão corajosa. Ela entra na barquinha que seu pai dobrou para ela e navega rumo à Holanda para visitar Greetje. Rapidamente ela alcança o oceano Índico. Lá ela faz amizade com o golfinho e com o tubarã-baleia. Eles contam como é a vida no mar e ajudam a menina a chegar ao destino final.

Layla lives in a village in Mozambique.
One day, she meets Greetje and her parents, who arrive from Holland for a working visit to the Komati factory.
At parting, Layla receives a card from her little friend.
Every day, she takes the postcard out of her treasure box and looks fascinated at the flowers displayed there.
She dreams of walking among the flower beds in that park.
In the middle of an enchanted night, Layla makes a brave decision.
She gets into the little boat that her father folded for her and sails towards Holland to visit Greetje.
It quickly reaches the Indian Ocean. There she makes friends with the dolphin and the whale shark.
They tell her what life is like at sea and help the girl reach her final destination.
