Butoh International Festival 2023: “unconventional, experimental, controversial”

The 2023 edition of the BUTOH INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL will take place on 6 and 7 October 2023, as usual at the Munganga Theater in Amsterdam, whose artistic direction is entrusted to Ezio Tangini. The program of this year's edition includes 12 performances with 15 artists from all over the world. Austria, Catalunya, Chile, France, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States.

In a rich and very interesting program, the public will be able to watch the performances of Coco Villarreal (Mexico); Elizabeth Damour (France); El Pepe Bolívar (Venezuela); Ezio Tangini (Italy); Iko Lee (Chile); Iurancha (Spain); Josephine Grundy (UK); Julie Becton Gillum (United States); Jutta Mayer (Austria); Lex Hijmans (Netherlands); Michela Montrasio (Italy); Mon Costa Justes (Catalunya); Rocìo Wabizasu (Spain); Tina Besnard (France); Uiko Watanabe (Japan).

Butoh was born in Japan between the 1950s and 1960s thanks to Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno. Originally the Butoh artistic movement was characterized by its provocative aspect, staging sexual taboos, grotesque, decadent and, at the same time, humorous representations. The role of the dancer crosses the boundaries of the concept of dance itself, becoming the fulcrum of the dramatic representation of life, balanced between nature and culture.

Also defined as psychosomatic dance or "dance of the body's rebellion", Butoh represents: A primordial cry that annihilates and nullifies every norm, the transformation and metamorphosis of the rebellion of the natural body against the violence of culture, which also brings to light visions from the subconscious sustained solely by the urgency of desire and primitive instinct. It is the struggle of invisible things inside the body which, once brought outside, acquires a sacred value. The universe becomes the dress of the body and the body becomes the container of the soul.

The Butoh Festival Amsterdam aims to share with everyone the beauty and power of the incredible art form and creative philosophy of Butoh – states Artistic Director Ezio Tangini − The Festival is modeled on other highly successful Butoh festivals around the world and hopes to participate in the growing exchange of international guest artists that has allowed a new generation of Butoh practitioners in Europe to flourish.

The Festival is aimed at an audience that is curious and wants to engage with something that comes from a true inner emotion and is expressed through the body – concludes Tangini – Butoh dance, born in Japan at the end of the 1950s, welcomed and metabolized by the West in the 1980s, it is not canceled out in the stereotype of a handed down and transmissible technique, but experiences an ever new epiphany in the individual experience of each dancer, whose results, formally indefinable, range from intervention to -improvised training at the extreme of the choreographic mechanism.
