OPEN YOUR EYES
One of the most wonderfully realized Spanish films in recent memory, Abre los Ojos dives deep into the cold dark waters of undercurrent realities. This eerie film centers on Cesar (Eduardo Noriega) who is rich, arrogant and selfish. He's got all the women he needs, and he abandons them almost as fast as he picked them up. In fact, he's after his best friend's girlfriend Sofia (Penélope Cruz), but an accident suddenly happens, throwing his life into jeopardy. He survives but he is disfigured terribly. The film shoots off from this premise in scatter-shot form, as Cesar tries to relate to society and reality. The film isn't told chronologically, its a shattered, broken film that often veers off into territories that are surreal.
Directed by Alejandro Amenábar (Thesis, The Others), this is a beautiful mix of different genres. It was re-made as "Vanilla Sky" with Tom Cruise, but according to almost everyone's estimation the original was far better than the big-budget Hollywood robbery.
This will be a high-definition screening.
